Grand Launching Indonesian Medical Education and Research Institute Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Indonesia

Obtaining definitive diagnoses of rare diseases is still a constraint in Indonesia because of the limited experts who are interested in rare diseases as well as limited facilities. On Wednesday, the 12th of April 2017, Yayasan MPS dan Penyakit Langka Indonesia was represented by chairwoman Peni Utami who joined the grand launching of the Indonesian Medical Education and Research Institute at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Indonesia, at Salemba, Jakarta.

The vision of IMERI FKUI is “Creating better healthcare and quality of life through disruptive innovation in medical education and research”. One of the research clusters at IMERI is the Human Genetic Research Cluster (HGRC). This cluster includes a team of geneticists who collaborate with the Rare Disease Excellent Service from RSUPN Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo (RSCM) in managing rare disease cases.

The education and reseach center at the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia was inaugurated by the Vice President, Mr. Jusuf Kalla and was attended by hundreds of other guests, including the Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education of Indonesia, Mr. Muhammad Nasir and the President of Islamic Development Bank (IDB). After the inauguration, Mr. Jusuf Kalla and his team visited a few research clusters including HGRC.

The chairwoman of HGRC, Dr. dr. Damayanti R Sjarif, Sp.A(K) describes the workflow and the achievements of HGRC so far to the vice president of Indonesia. Dr. Damayanti explains a few pilot studies in newborn screening for a few types of rare diseases, such as maple syrup urine disease and phenylketonuria using the LC MS/MS machine. HGRC has collaborated with several genetic laboratories overseas to diagnose some multiple congenital anomalies using Microarray. Unfortunately, this machine has yet to be available in Indonesia. The inauguration of the IMERI building is hoped to be the first of many steps to better the diagnosis and management of rare disease patients in Indonesia.
